Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich


Adding to our state side voyage Around the World in 80 BBQ's this week is our Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches. Namesake sake of their home town Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This dish is extremely simple but packs great flavour for everyone to enjoy.

This recipe is quick and easy to follow, just what you need when the British weather is turning a bit chillier but you still want to make great use out of your Weber BBQ. For these sandwiches you can chop and change some of the ingredients to your liking. Mushrooms are a great addition and experimenting with your favourite cheese is also a good idea. You can also change the rub you use for your steak to suit you.

We've used a simple Paprika and Thyme rub for our Rump Steaks and then just a few extra ingredients to make this dish the pride and joy of Philly.

MAIN INGREDIENTS

  • 4 rump Steaks
  • 2 tsp ground black pepper corns
  • 2 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Dried Thyme
  • 2 bell peppers
  • 2 medium onions
  • Cheddar Cheese slices
  • Bread rolls
  • Vegetable oil

EQUIPMENT

You can create this dish using any Weber BBQ; charcoal or gas.

We've used the following:

This recipe makes about 8 small rolls.

IN THE KITCHEN

  • Using a pestle and mortar grind up the peppercorns along with the salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and thyme. Put this to one side.
  • Thinly slice the onions and peppers.
  • Season your both sides of your steaks on the chopping board with the rub you made earlier.
  • Prepare the rolls or buns by cutting nearly all the way though leaving a space for the filling.

AT THE BBQ

  • Set up your Weber BBQ with a Griddle and direct grilling on very high heat. We've used a Genesis Universal Griddle but you can use a GBS Griddle.
  • Sear your Steaks on the cooking grates for about 1 minute on each side.
  • Remove steak and cut into about ½ inch slices.
  • Add a bit of vegetable oil to your Griddle. Then add your onions and let them begin to cook.
  • Add the sliced peppers. Let the onions and peppers cook for about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the sliced steak and cook all together until meat is completely cooked turning every 1-2 minutes.
  • Cover with the cheese slices and warm your rolls.

SERVE

  • Fill the rolls with your Cheese Steaks and you're good to go!
